#AndSheCycles campaign will showcase girls and women who ride bikes in St Andrews. It aims to address the challenges teenage girls and women face when cycling.

This month, we shine the spotlight on Dora, Senior Lecturer in German, who cycles to work every day.

We asked her a few questions, and here are her answers:

What’s the best thing about cycling and why?

Getting around town quickly, fresh air and going to East Sands (the pool not the sea!) for a swim before work.

Are there any particular things that enable/motivate you to cycle to school?

The Bike to Work Scheme made it easy and affordable to get my bike. It’s great to be able to just cycle in and not have to worry about parking

Do you think you are/would be stigmatized for cycling?

I don’t feel stigmatized for cycling, but there are a lot of drivers who seem to feel frustrated by cyclists.

Do you feel safe cycling at night?

I feel safe-ish cycling at night, but I definitely enjoy the lighter evenings! I don’t feel especially safe cycling in general because so many drivers are in such a hurry that they take what feel like big risks overtaking you.

If in 10 years time everyone in St Andrews cycled – what’s the one thing that would help this happen ?

More cycle lanes and better signage/road markings – even though there is a cycle lane on Bell St by Topping, drivers often do not acknowledge it.
