Transition’s Winter Fair

We are THRILLED to announce that we are organising, along with the steering group and our reuse and skillshare volunteers, a special winter fair focused on reuse, skill sharing, and upcycling!

Join us for a fun, colourful, and alternative winter fair filled with sustainable gifts, exciting toy and party clothes swaps, good-as-new Secret Santa surprises and fun creative upcycling stalls to make some truly personal gifts! You’ll also find some great second-hand clothing and tasty global food to enjoy.

You’ll learn how to make Christmas crackers & Christmas card bunting/notebooks, do furoshiki cloth wrapping, visible mending, macrame, knitting & crocheting, origami, candle-making, denim feather/storage bucket/earring/bag and shrunken woollen hot water bottle covers/finger-less gloves. There will also be a lino-printing demonstration, have-a-go pyrography and an ‘exploring electronics’ table. And all because there are some amazingly talented, skilled and passionate people in our community who want to volunteer their time to get you on board the reuse, skillshare and repair bandwagon!

There will also be a chance to fulfil someone else’s Christmas wish – this is being organised with support from the wonderful North East Fife Community Hub.

Plus, don’t miss a fantastic performance by our student acapella choir at 5pm and some local musical talent throughout the event – there is a grand piano on the stage at the Town Hall and we invite you to come and play for your community (Book a slot by emailing us transition @st-andrews.ac.uk)!

There are 3 ways you can get involved NOW – please email us at transition @st-andrews.ac.uk

  1. Please donate good quality, good condition children’s toys/games to us in November and receive a ‘credit note’ for our Toy/Game Christmas Present Exchange on Dec 8th. Children love receiving Christmas presents but they don’t need to be brand new and cost the earth. (You will also be able to buy these items at the Fair – money raised supports Transition’s work).
  2. Please donate Christmas Party Wear (adults and children’s) and receive an optional ‘credit note’ to pick up a new-to-you outfit at our Christmas Party Wear Exchange on Dec 8th (you can also just donate without needing to exchange). Or simply bring your item to the Fair and exchange it on the day. (You will also be able to buy items at the Fair – money raised supports Transition’s work).
  3. We are running a ‘Secret Santa’ give away stall for those who might be planning Secret Santa gift giving at work or with family/friends. We are looking for donations of good-as-new preloved small gifts to help us support people who don’t want to over-spend this Christmas. As above, you will receive a credit note in exchange for any items.
  4. We are looking for certain materials to upcycle: shrunken woolens, men’s button down shirts, unwanted t-shirts, toilet rolls, holey jeans, and used Christmas cards – you can bring them on the day to the Fair!

Our Winter Fair is the perfect opportunity to explore creative ways to upcycle and reuse while having a great time with friends and family. Let’s celebrate together this holiday season with creativity, style, laughter and compassion. We can’t wait to see you there!

Sunday the 8th of December in the afternoon from 2:30 – 5:30 pm. All welcome! Register on this page for an Event Reminder nearer the time.
