Transition is looking for a student to take forward a study on driver and cyclist behaviour in relation to the use of bike mounted lights and reflectors aimed at reducing vehicles close passing cyclists.
It will look to support the design and undertaking of a study where a cohort of St Andrews cyclists, mostly users of the St Andrews Bike Pool, will have their bikes fitted with a close pass indicator. Surveys of cyclists can then be undertaken before and after fitting of the indicator as well as interviews with drivers and cyclists to understand more.
The role will comprise of:
- Developing an experiment to understand the benefits for cyclists of using Close Pass Indicators on their bikes
- Supporting the administration of the scheme and leading on implementation
- Undertake before and after interviews with cyclists and other road users
- Additional: Ethics approval and report publication
This internship offers a unique opportunity to undertake a practical research project that could influence road user behaviour and improve safety for cyclists in St Andrews.

Expected Payment will be based on hours worked and standard stipend rate up to a maximum of £2200 (around 200 hours over 20 weeks). Please see Careers website for details. Flexible working is expected with majority of time spent in the Transition Office to get the best value from the internship.
It is funded by Paths for All through the Active Travel Transition Fund and delivered by Transition University St Andrews for the University. The experiment will aim to run from November with completion before 31st March 2025
