As the development of the Eden Campus goes ahead, there is also a development of the food growing spaces in Guardbridge.
The Guardbridge Community Garden is tucked away between the weir and the water treatment plant on the Leuchars side of Guardbridge. You turn down a lane between the 40 mile an hour sign and a blue bin, past a wooden gate and through a creaky gate. Once through a short tunnel made of blackthorn and rose bushes the space opens out to a gravelled seating area, with paths leading either side of a central wild area.
It is a lovely space, with lots of potential, lots of work has gone into the garden in the past, so there is a great framework in need of a bit of attention. The plan is to manage the Central area as a perennial meadow, this involves taking out any invasive weeds such as dock and thistle, striming the area back once a year, at the end of summer, allowing the wildflowers to seed.
The other areas that are already present are a native woodland area (great for den building) and some established fruit trees. Additional planting of more fruit bushes near the apple trees will add to the food forest feel of that corner.
Hope to find you in the garden soon, we are currently running work sessions on Friday mornings 10-12 noon. Additional work sessions will be listed on Facebook and www.transitionsta.org.
