On the fifth day of Christmas my true love showed to me 5 creature features hidden amongst the trees!
Downtime over the festive period provides the perfect opportunity enjoy some time outdoors and look out for some of the winter wildlife. The big 5 winter wildlife moments to look out for:
1) Common Seal and Grey Seal
If you explore the Tenstmuir coastline you might spot them basking on the beach or sandbanks, or see their dark heads bobbing in the sea.
2) Pink Footed Geese
If you pop down to the Eden Estuary Visitor Centre at dusk you can watch and listen to thousands of geese coming to roost on the estuary.
3) Red squirrel
With few leaves on the trees, winter is a good time to spot red squirrels scampering through the trees. Take an early morning walk along the Lade Braes or in the St Andrews Botanic Garden to try and spot a little red furry friend.
4) White Tailed Eagle
If you take a stroll along Kinshaldy beach you might be lucky enough to spot the impressive white tailed sea eagle soaring above you.
5) Fox
This distinctive garden visitor can often be heard at night during this time of year, as young foxes look to find new territories. If you leave out some dog food, you might be lucky and see one in your garden.
