Ecological Projects Manager

Johanna’s been on the Fife nature conservation scene since 2008 and thoroughly enjoys working with people to improve our local habitats for wildlife. She joined the Environment Team at University of St Andrews in 2021. Her main role has been co-ordinating two exciting, grant-funded projects to create a more vibrant, biodiverse campus. Meadows in the Making was an exciting springboard towards managing the campus more sustainably.

Restoring St Andrews Coastal Corridors was a landscape-scale project in collaboration with local land managers to create and connect new habitat including woodland, hedgerows, wetland and meadow. SHe’s always looking at ways to help implement the University’s Biodiversity Action Plan.

She enjoys developing strong partnerships and supporting all of the enthusiasm to help nature to flourish. Students and members of the public like to get involved, so she runs practical sessions from tree planting and hay raking, to seed sowing and weeding. It’s a sociable, positive and rewarding role!

Johanna loves temperate woodlands in particular and started her career with Woodland Trust Scotland, then worked for RSPB in the Cairngorms, and eventually on the Fife Local Biodiversity Action Plan. Her hobbies include wild camping in remote corners of Scotland and foraging.
